A Trip to Maine: Part 2

Waking before dawn, I pop in my earbuds, bring up the Peloton app on my phone, and head out for a 45-minute walk with coach Rebecca Kennedy. Her playlist was 80’s centric; some songs I had forgotten about, but when the music started, I remembered every lyric. This was my first class with Rebecca, but if this morning’s songs are representative of her usual, it won’t be the last. The air was cool with a slight breeze, but with the exercise, it was warm.

Returning to my room, I shower, dress, and have two hours to kill. Breakfast is available here, but it doesn’t open until 8:00. So, I open the book I’m reading, John Jakes’ Love and War, the second book in a trilogy about two families in the Civil War era. All three books in the series are very dense, there is a lot of plot to get through, but very well written. The Civil War era is one of my favorite times in US history, and I’m enjoying Jakes’ writing; he is quickly becoming a favorite author.

After a breakfast of bagel, OJ, and fresh fruit, I take off for my business of the day and start walking the Marginal Way, a 1 1/4-mile walk along a rocky cliff. It’s been many years since I’ve walked the “MW”, and it’s changed. The biggest change is that it is now paved, and there are over 40 benches along the way where one can stop and enjoy the view. By now, the sun has come up and the weather is getting warmer, The Marginal Way is a great walk, and by the end, I’m reminded of that old adage: “If you walk out, you probably have to walk back.”

That’s not a problem, however. Given where I started, the terminal end of the trail is in the small village of Perkins Cove. This is the village within the village of Ogunquit. Mainly comprised of shops, restaurants, and fishing boats, Perkins Cove is a nice place to spend some time.

Taking the streets back to the hotel, I get something to eat from the food I brought, and settle in for the rest of the day. The wind is picking up. Surely the storm is on its way.
